How can Hypnosis Hypnotherapy Help Resolve Past Conflict…?
Today I would like to answer the question, “Which technique can help a patient resolve past emotional conflict?”
The technique of regression can be used to help the client/patient re-evaluate incidents in their past and achieve a better perspective about them and enable the person to stop the effect of the past controlling how they live their life in the present. Regression can heal, help and ease buried trauma and childhood events which occurred when the people involved were not old enough to understand their meaning and significance. During regression, you relive your past as though you were there, experiencing the event again. Regression is a very rough tool of hypnotherapy and language is used in the present tense IE ‘I am 5 years old’ etc and it is very good at identifying which past event has caused a phobia and helping children overcome abuse. It is the power to open the doorway to an emotional memory or event.
Below is an example of how I might use this tool of hypnosis ( not to be attempted by anyone who is not a fully qualified hypnotherapist ):
- Ask the client to lie down in a comfortable position and directly say to them, ” Do you want to go in to hypnosis?”
- Take them in to hypnosis through the application of an appropriate induction technique such as ’stopping the count’.
- Create a ’safe place’, by asking the patient to imagine, visualise and experience a place which is safe, comfortable and pleasant to the client, informing them that they can go there at any time they want to or need to ( usually facilitated by hypnotherapy ).
- Establish an IMR ( ideo motor response ), normally an index finger response to illustrate to the therapist ( myself ) that the client is in and reliving the past experience. The index finger on either hand that you choose to use is placed under the subconscious control.
- Take the patient concerned in to regression. Throughout the regression the individual will go to situations and places that they are familiar with, what is different is the emotion or feelings they are associating and experiencing with them. The subconscious will have put a incident out of perspective to cover up any emotional issue.
The process of regression designs and implants new programmes over the past emotional imprint, so that you have the perspective of your current adult age on the experience and no that of your younger age from regression.
As you bring the person in hypnosis out of regression it is important that you deliver an Ego Strengthening routine to turn the negatives of their past experience in to positive ones. You are able to turn the vicious circle of a person’s past in to a virtuous cycle. The results are usually quite rapid and physically evident to see from days to on longer than a couple of weeks following the session.
After the regression hypnosis hypnotherapy it is good to allow the client to have personal time to settle and let the new perspective develop and the residue to filter through all age groups to the present.
Furthermore, it is important to note that when you are conducting regression with a client never inform them directly that you are going to undertake this tool in the session as the person may have preconceptions about regression from the stereotyping and conditioning of society. Inform them for example, ’you are shocking the validity of the memory’.
In my opinion, regression is a most powerful and wonderful tool and its strength to heal, resolve and ease past traumas is under-stated.

Indeed, hypnosis is a wonderful and practical healing modality. Part of what I like and admire about it so much is how it is action oriented and a client typically is DONE within, say 12 sessions.
It is truly therapeutic to help the client.
Certainly working with a medical hypnotherapist like yourself helps to foster their trust, comfort, and confidence level with you, I’m sure.

David,
I am always fascinated with what regression hypnosis can do.
I hear that it can also allow the patient to get into their past life to explain why certain relationships exist. Is this true?

I think this would be very useful for those with PTSD. EMDR is also very effective. It is used a lot with veterans. You should check into working with veterans with PTSD. They have great medical insurance for that and you would really be able to help their suffering.

This is really fascinating David. I can see the value of addressing trauma and reprogramming those feelings. Have you ever encountered a patient who you cannot take through these stages? What do you do then?

Have you read the research on false regression? Is it easy to avoid planting false concepts if you’re hyper-alert to the possibility, or is it easy to do it inadvertently?

I am skeptical when it comes to past life regression. I tried it once with an inexperienced hypnotherapist. I couldn’t get past my childhood years because they were too painful and scary. I’d like to try again sometime. Even though I am a hypnotherapist myself, I don’t think i could do my own past life regression.

Hypnosis hypnotherapy has a vast number of modalities. Regression is a big one for reframing painful experiences so the client can move forward.

I could see where this would help many people in all walks of pain. I think alot of people don’t believe in hypnosis. So is it true that you can only go under if you want or can it be induced somehow?

Very interesting. I did a past life regression once. It was helpful in that if what I experienced in the regression really was a true reminder of my phychic past it helped explain to me some of my knee-jerk reactions to some events in my life.
Nice article.

I’ve heard of regressions, but I am not too sure what they are. I’ve also heard of the past life ones. The power of hypnosis seems very strong.
