David’s Top Ten Hypnosis Inductions…!

By David Power • on April 23, 2009

hypnosis-cartoonThe induction in medical hypnosis or in any other type of hypnotherapy is the process or ritual which involves the therapist working to achieve a progressive relaxation of the body and mind in order to reach a state of trance/hypnosis . This can incorporate various procedures which are used to facilitate the client’s detachment from the awareness of their surroundings. When you are undergoing hypnosis training , inductions are one of the major components of the many hypnosis techniques you learn to become  a competent  hypnotherapist. In fact, I found inductions to one of the most enjoyable parts of learning hypnosis when I doing  my clinical hypnosis training in London, they fascinated me immensely. One of the questions I have been asked is “Can you name ten different hypnosis inductions and which one is your favourite…?!

Well below are five methods of reliable and easy to use inductions of hypnosis:

          1. Arm Drop Method ( This induces limb rigidity )

          2. Fractional Relaxation ( This is progessive relaxation of body through imagery )

          3. Closed Eye Technique

          4. Fixed Point Technique

          5. Arm Levitation

          6. Stopping the Count

          7. Glued Hand

          8. Clasped Hands

         9. Pendulum Method

         10. Confusion Technique

The above inductions are commonly used in sessions to help a range of issues from hypnosis motivation, insomnia to weight control hypnosis.

The method I remember from Gilligan’s Island and the Batman TV Series is the swinging object on the chain. It was usually able to knock the unsuspecting person out in fifteen seconds flat…

I’ve always been curious about hypnotism; what proportion of people do you think can be hypnotised and what is it that means some people can’t?

And then there is Erickson hypnosis which is difficult to explain as it just happens through the skilled leading of the therapist. Fascinating to watch someone hypnotize a room.

Hi David,

this is great therapeutic information so people have a variety of techniques at their disposal. Great set of tools!

In the Grief Recovery work from The Grief Recovery Institute, one of the metaphors we often use when describing the information we have to-date for how to deal with Grief are the Grief Myths like, “Don’t Feel Bad… Just Keep Busy… Grief Just Takes Time… Grieve Alone…” is that they are about as helpful for completing the emotion of grief as a hammer is effective for painting your wall. And when you DO try to use that, it just makes a mess! lol!

Best regards,

You are such a goof ball at the same time that you are a hypnosis expert. That little cartoon man with the watch is a riot. He makes me giggle.

Thank you for explaining about the top ten hypnosis inductions!

Cheers!
